2. Nellie Samantha ESTERBROOK (John George ) was born on 7 Feb 1876 in Attica, Fountain County, IN. She died on 24 Feb 1946 in Chillicothe, Livingston County, MO. She was buried on 27 Feb 1946 in the Avalon Cemetery in Livingston County, MO.

The following is the obituary of Nellie Renville:
“Mrs. Nellie Renville died Sunday Night - Passed Away at Chillicothe Hospital at 10:20; Home at 903 Bryan.”
Mrs. Nellie Renville, 903 Bryan street, widow of the late William Renville, passed away at the Chillicothe Hospital Sunday night at 10:20 o’clock. She had been in failing health for the past year and was taken to the hospital last Thursday for medical treatment.
Mrs. Renville was born February 7, 1876 near Attica, Indiana and resided there until she was fifteen years old when she moved with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Esterbrook to Albion, Illinois. She was married to William Renville and after a residence there they moved to a farm near Avalon where they resided until last spring. Mr. Renville’s death occurred March 12, 1945.
Surviving relatives are: one daughter, Mrs. Rex Browning, Kansas City; two granddaughters, Mrs. Marvin May, Avalon, and Madeline Browning, Kansas City; one grandson, Harold McDonald, who is in the service; one sister, Miss Jessie Esterbrook of this city and five brothers, John L. Esterbrook, Ft. Collins, Colorado; Lee Esterbrook, Laramie, Wyoming; Harley Esterbrook, Flandreau, South Dakota; Harry Esterbrook, and Ben Esterbrook, Sioux Rapids, Iowa.

"Ben Esterbrook Dies; Once Lived Near Avalon"
Ben Esterbrook of Santa Ana, Calif., died at 4:30 o’clock yesterday afternoon at his home, 617 West Fourth street. He had been ill for some time.
Mr. Esterbrook is survived by three brothers, Harry Esterbrook, Sioux Rapids, Ia.; John Esterbrook, Ft. Collins, Colo., and Lee Esterbrook, Ft. Laramie, Wyo.; a sister, Miss Jessie Esterbrook, Chillicothe; a son, Ralph Esterbrook, Santa Ana. He was preceded in death by a brother, Harley Esterbrook, Eagau, S. Dak.; two sisters, Mrs. Nellie Renville, Chillicothe, and Jennie Esterbrook, his twin who died in infancy.

"Harley Esterbrook Dies in South Dakota-Burial of Former Countian Will Be at Avalon"
Harley Esterbrook, 72, brother of Miss Jessie Esterbrook of this city, died Sunday morning at 9:30 o'clock at his home in Flandreau, S. D. Mr. Esterbrook was a former resident of Livingston County.
Mr. Esterbrook, the son of George Esterbrook and Mary Esterbrook, was born June 29, 1885, at Attica, Ind. He was educated in the schools of Indiana and Illinois. He came to Avalon in 1903 and resided there until 1916. Mr. Esterbrook married Miss Nellie Beaver on March 8, 1914, at Avalon. He has resided in Flandreau for the last 38 years.
Besides his sister, he is survived by his wife of the home; a daughter, Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Asp of St. Paul, Minn.; the sister, Miss Esterbrook; four brothers, Ben Esterbrook, Santa Ana, Calif.; John Esterbrook, Fort Collins, Colo.; Harry Esterbrook, Siouz Rapids, Idaho, and Lee Esterbrook, Laramie, Wyo., and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister.
The body will be brought by train to Chillicothe, arriving Wednesday morning. Funeral services will be held from the Norman Funeral Home, Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Harley married Ellen (Nellie) Augusta BEEVER daughter of Vincent BEEVER and Elizabeth WHITESIDE on 8 Mar 1914 in Avalon, Livingston County, MO. Ellen was born on 18 Sep 1895 in Livingston County, MO. She died on 22 Jun 1959 in St Paul, Ramsey County, MN. She was buried in the Avalon Cemetery in Livingston County, MO.

The following is the obituary of Nellie Esterbrook:
“Mrs. Esterbrook Dies in Minnesota - Beever Daughter Was Born at Avalon”
Mrs. Ellen Augusta (Nellie) Esterbrook of Egan, S. Dak., died at 2:15 o’clock Monday in St. Paul, Minn. She was 73. Mrs. Esterbrook, a former resident of the Avalon community had been in failing health several months. Her death occurred in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Julian Asp. She was born Sept. 18, 1885, near Avalon, a daughter of Vincent and Elizabeth (Whiteside) Beever, On March 8, 1914, she was married to Harley R. Esterbrook. Mrs. Esterbrook leaves her daughter; three grandchildren, Johnny, Patricia and David Asp; two brothers, Arthur A. Beever, Avalon, and Boyd A. Beever, Chillicothe, and a sister, Mrs. Harry Stephens, Hale. She was preceded in death by her husband on Sept. 22, 1957. The remains will be received Wednesday morning by the Norman Funeral Home. Services will be at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon from the chapel of the funeral home. Burial will be made in the family lot at the Avalon cemetery. “Last Rites are Held For Mrs. Esterbrook” - Services for Mrs. Ellen Esterbrook, 74 who died Monday in St. Paul at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Julian Asp, were held at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon at the chapel of the Norman Funeral Home. The Rev. George Rhoads of Egan, S Dak., officiated. Mrs. Eldon Rosenthal sang "Beneath the Cross of Jesus" and "Beyond the Sunset." Mrs. Joseph J. Shy played the accompaniment. Pallbearers were Vincent and Wayne Beever, Carl Anderson, Earl Whiteside, Delford Stephens and Eldon Rosenthal. Burial was in the family lot in the Avalon cemetery. The following is the obituary of Lee Esterbrook:
"Lee Esterbrook Dies at Laramie, Wyo.- He Was a Livingston County Resident for Several Year."
Lee Esterbrook, former Chillicothean and a brother of Miss Jessie Esterbrook of this city, died at the family home in Laramie, Wyo., this morning. Mr. Esterbrook, who suffered a stroke in 1960 while visiting in Chillicothe, had been seriously ill the last three months.
He was born at Alvin, Ill., on February 4, 1897, a son of J. G. and Mary Foster Esterbrook, moving to Avalon with his parents in 1903. He was graduate of the Avalon school and farmed in the Avalon community, later moving to Laramie for a residence.
In 1916, he married Mary Kerns of Avalon. Surviving in addition to his wife, are four sons, Eldon Esterbrook, Laramie; Stanford Esterbrook, Petaluma, Calif.; Richard Esterbrook, Portland, Ore., and Francis Esterbrook, Boulder, Colo.; a daughter, Mrs. Wesley Griggs, Boulder, Colo.; two brothers, Harry Esterbrook, Sioux Rapids, Ia., and John Esterbrook, Ft. Collins, Colo.; and the one sister. Preceding him in death were his parents; two brothers, Ben and Harley Esterbrook, and a sister, Mrs. William Renville.
Miss Esterbrook and her brother, Harry Esterbrook, who had been visiting here the past week, left today for Laramie to attend funeral services and burial, which are tentatively set for Friday afternoon. (Chillicothe Constitution Tribune, Chillicothe, Livingston County, Missouri, 17 Dec 1964)

Ruth B. Griggs, of Boulder, died of natural causes Saturday, Sept 10, 2005, in Boulder. She was 87. The daughter of George L Esterbrook and Lena M. Kerns Esterbrook, she was born March 23, 1918, in Avalon, Mo. On Sept 10, 1936, she married W. Wesley Griggs, in Chillicothe, Mo. They moved to Boulder in 1955. A 1936 graduate of Avalon High School,she worked in varrious retail stores. "She was an avid reader and crossword puzzler; she loved her family, grandchildren and greatchildren," her family said. Survivors include a daughter, Carol A Peterson, of Niwot; a brother, Frank Esterbrook, of Berthoud; a son, Frank L. Griggs, of Lafayette; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; three brothers; and two granddaughters. A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Mountain View Memorial Park, 3016 Kalmia Ave., Boulder. Interment will follow. Donations may be sent to HospiceCare of Boulder and Broomfield Counties, 2594 Trailridge Drive East, Suite A, Lafayette, CO 80026. Crist Mortuary, in Boulder, is in charge of arrangements.·
        Ruth married William Wesley GRIGGS "Wes" son of Francis Lafayette GRIGGS and Nora Editha WINFREY on 4 Sep 1936 in Chillicothe, Livingston County, MO. William was born on 25 Jul 1910 in Avalon, Livingston County, MO. He died on 18 Feb 1980 in Boulder, Boulder County, CO. He was buried on 21 Feb 1980 in the Mountain View Memorial Park in Boulder, CO.

Wes and Ruth (Esterbrook) Griggs were born and raised in Livingston County, Missouri in and around the town of Avalon. They both graduated from Avalon High School: Wes in 1929 and Ruth in 1936. They were married on September 4, 1936 in Chillicothe, Livingston County, Missouri. They lived and worked in Livingston County, Missouri until 1945 when they moved to Laramie, Wyoming, where they remained until 1947, at which time they returned to Livingston County, Missouri. Wes worked at the Missouri Farmers Association (MFA) Creamery in Chillicothe until 1955 when they moved to Boulder, Colorado where Wes worked at the Watts-Hardy Dairy until his retirement in 1975. Ruth worked in retail in both Wyoming and Missouri and when they moved to Boulder, Colorado she joined the Joslins Department Store where she worked until her retirement. They are buried together at the Mountain View Memorial Park in Boulder, Colorado.

Obituary of William Wesley Griggs:
William W. Griggs, 3105 E. Aurora Ave., died Monday at Boulder Community Hospiital. He was 69. He was born July 25, 1910, in Avalon, Mo., and he marrried Ruth B. Esterbrook on Sept. 4, 1936, in Chillicothe, Mo. Mr. Griggs came to Boullder from Missouri in 1955. He worked as a dairyman for Watts-Hardy Dairy for 20 years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church. Survivors include a son, Frank of Denver; a daughhter, Carol Ann Peterson of Boulder; a sister, Fay Fuller of Flandreau, S.D.; and four grandchildren. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Howe Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. L. Gerald Burrus officiiating. Burial will be in Mounntain View Cemetery.
  17 M iii Stanford Lee ESTERBROOK "Stan" was born on 5 Dec 1922 in Mendon, Chariton County, MO. He died on 14 Jun 1973 in Mill Valley, Marin County, CA. He was buried in the Cypress Hill Memorial Park, Petaluma, Sonoma County, CA.

Stan served in the U.S. Army Infantry as a Private First Class during World War II in the European Theatre. Stan entered the service on 7 Jan 1943 and went through training at Atlantic City, New Jersey; Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Westover Field, Massachusetts; Bradley Field, Connecticut; Grenier Field, New Hampshire; and Camp Kilmer, New Jersey. Stan and Mary met at a penny arcade in Manchester, New Hampshire before he was shipped over seas on 5 Dec 1943, they wrote love letters to each other all during the war. Stan returned to the United States on 28 Jan 1946 and was discharged from the military at Fort Devens, Massachusetts on 2 Feb 1946. For his service Stan was received the European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon, the American Theatre Ribbon, the Victory Metal and the American Defense Ribbon.

A memorial gathering will be from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, May 5, in the home of Anna Miller, 6351 N. Detroit Ave., for Richard Eugene Esterbrook, who died April 19 at age 69. Mr. Esterbrook was bom March 7,1932, in Avalon, Mo., and as a child moved to Laramie, Wyo., where he served in the National Guard. He had lived in Portland since 1956 and was an engineer for the Union Pacific Railroad for 41 years before retiring in 1992. In 1951, he married Doris McCoy; they divorced. He married Sharon Swenson in 1979; they divorced. Survivors include his daughters, Debra Roberts and Kelly Esterbrook; stepdaughter, Penny Batson; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild. She moved to Apache Junction, Ariz., in 1998. In 1951, she married Richard; they divorced and he died in 2001. Survivors include her daughters, Debra Roberts and Kelly Esterbrook; brothers, Kenneth McCoy, Milton "Ross" McCoy and Russell McCoy; sister, Sharon Rail; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.
