Philip WINFREY Sr.
Second Generation
2. Elisha T WINFREY (Philip
) was born 1 on 27 Aug 1785 in Buckingham County, VA. He died 2 on 19 Sep 1817 in Adair County, KY.
Little is known about Elisha other than he was the eldest child of Philip and Martha Winfrey and that he married Sally Drake in 1815 at the age of 29, had two daughters: Caroline Hall Winfrey (b: 1816) and Nancy C. Winfrey (b: 1817), and died in 1817 at the age of 32.
Elisha married 1 Sally DRAKE daughter of Joel DRAKE and Amey HALL on 30 Jul 1815 in Adair County, KY.
After the death of her first husband Elisha, Sally married Matthew Busby and had two additional children.
They had the following children:

3. Elizabeth WINFREY "Betsey" (Philip
) was born 1 on 5 Mar 1788 in Buckingham County, VA. She died 2 about 1863 in Adair County, KY.
Elizabeth married 1, 2 (1) Thomas JONES son of Charles B. JONES Sr. and Frances Dorcas THORP on 22 Dec 1808 in Adair County, KY. Thomas was born 3, 4 before 1784 in Bedford County, VA. He died 5 before Jun 1848 in Adair County, KY.
Thomas and Elizabeth were married on 22 Dec 1808 in Adair County, KY and are first found in the 1810 Adair County census with the following household: 1 male age under 10 (Green W. b: 1810), 1 male age 26-40 (Thomas b: bef 1784) and 1 female age 16-25 (Elizabeth b: 1788).
Thomas and Elizabeth are next found in the 1830 Adair County census with the following household: 2 males under 5 (Charles b: 1828/1829 and Thomas b: 1825/1826), 1 male 5-10 (Philip b: 1822/1823), 2 males 10-15 (Chesley b: 1820 and William b: 1815/1819), 1 male 15-20 (unidentified son b: 1811/1815), 1 male 20-30 (Green W. b: 1810), 1 male 40-50 (Thomas b: bef 1784) and one female 40-50 (Elizabeth b: 1788).
In the 1840 census Thomas and Elizabeth are still living in Adair County with the following household: 2 males 10-15 (Charles b: 1828/1829 and Thomas b: 1825/1826), 2 males 15-20 (Philip b: 1822/1823 and Chesley b: 1820), 1 male 20-30 (William b: 1815/1819), 1 male 50-60 (Thomas b: bef 1784) and 1 female 50-60 (Elizabeth b: 1788).
After the death of her first husband, Thomas Jones, Elizabeth is found as the head of household in the 1850 census in the Second District of Adair County, Kentucky. The household was listed as follows, which includes her two youngest sons:
Elizabeth Jones, age 62, born Virginia.
Thomas J. Jones, age 24, born Kentucky.
Charles F. Jones, age 21, born Kentucky.
We next find Elizabeth living with her second husband, Samuel Gowdy, in the 1860 census in Division No. 2 of Adair County, Kentucky as follows:
Samuel Gowdy, age 70, born Virginia.
Elizabeth Gowdy, age 72, born Virginia.
They had the following children:

Unidentified Son JONES was born 1 about 1811/1815 in Adair County, KY.
It has not been proven, but it is believed that the name of the unidentified son of Thomas Jones and Elizabeth Winfrey that appeared in the 1830 Adair County census was Reuben Jones. His death record is found in the family bible of Philip Winfrey, Jr., brother of the above Elizabeth Winfrey. The record appears as follows:
Reuben Jones Departed

Sarah JONES was born 1, 2 estimated 1811/1819 in Adair County, KY. She died 3 before 1830 in Adair County, KY.
The only records that has been found on Sarah Jones, daughter of Thomas Jones and Elizabeth Winfrey, comes from the “Carroll County Roots”, Vol. IV, No. 4, page 5 (a quarterly magazine published by the Carroll County Genealogical Association in Carrollton, Missouri) and an anonymous Family Group Record on familysearch.org. Carroll County Roots gives no birth or death dates for her and the familysearch.org record gives only an estimated birth date of 1818.
Sarah was not mentioned in any of the affairs of her father’s estate and she has not been found in any of the censuses; although Thomas Jones her father, cannot be found in the 1820 census therefore she could have been present in that census. Looking at the 1830 and the 1840 census and the age gaps between the children, if Sarah existed she was probably born sometime between 1811 and 1819 and died before 1830 when no daughter is listed in the census.

4. Julia Anne WINFREY (Philip
) was born 1 on 24 May 1790 in Buckingham County, VA. She was christened 2 on 21 Aug 1837. She died 3 after 1860.
Julia married 1, 2 Levi JONES son of Charles B. JONES Sr. and Frances Dorcas THORP on 12 Feb 1811 in Adair County, KY. Levi was born 3 about 1789 in Bedford County, VA. He died 4, 5 on 4 Apr 1863 in Adair County, KY.
Levi and Anna Jones are found in the 1850 census in the Second District of Adair County, Kentucky as follows:
Levi Jones, age 63, farmer, born Virginia.
Ann Jones, age 60, born Virginia.
Thomas Jones, age 14, born Kentucky.
Sarah Jones, age 25, born Kentucky.
Next we find them in Division No. 2 of Adair County, Kentucky in the 1860 census:
Levi Jones, age 74, farmer, born Virginia.
Anna Jones, age 69, born Virginia.
Sanderson H. Jones, age 34, farm laborer, born Virginia.
James W. Gadberry, age 4, born Virginia.
Who the above Sanderson H. Jones is not clear, he perhaps was Levi and Anne’s son, but nothing has been found to confirm this relationship. The above James W. Gadberry appears to be Levi and Anne’s grandson, son of their daughter Sarah who married Andrew Green Gadberry. James W. is also listed in the household of his parents, Andrew and Sarah, in the 1860 census, however, there he is listed as being born in Kentucky.

Elisha married 1 (1) Mary B. EVANS daughter of Benjamin EVANS and Mary WINFREY on 9 Aug 1841 in Adair County, KY. Mary was born 2, 3, 4 on 17 May 1820 in Kentucky. She died 5 on 12 Jul 1842.
We know from census records that Benjamin Evans and Mary Winfrey had a daughter born between 1820 and 1824, but her name has never been found. Per Adair County Marriage records, we know that Elisha E. Jones, son of Levi Jones and Julia Anne Winfrey, married a Mary B. Evans on 9 Aug 1841 in Adair County, Kentucky. This Mary B. Evans died sometime before 25 Oct 1844 when Elisha remarried. We then find in the bible of Philip Winfrey, Jr., brother of the above Mary Winfrey, the following birth and death record:
Mary B. Jones Departed
This life July the 12th 1842
Age 22 years 1 month & 26 days
The above results in a calculated birth date for this Mary B. Jones of 17 May 1820, which coincides with the birth date range of the third daughter of Benjamin Evans and Mary Winfrey. This coupled with the death date of Elisha E. Jones’ first wife, it has been concluded that these two Mary B. Joneses are the same and that she was the daughter of Benjamin Evans and Mary Winfrey. |

5. Mary WINFREY "Polly" (Philip
) was born 1 on 20 Apr 1792 in Buckingham County, VA. She died 2 in 1870/1880 in Kentucky.
Mary married 1 Benjamin EVANS son of Thomas EVANS on 6 May 1814 in Adair County, KY. Benjamin was born 2 in Virginia. He died 3 about 1829/1830 in Kentucky.
Benjamin and Mary were married in 1814, but cannot be found in the 1820 census. After Benjamin died, Mary is found in the 1830 Adair County, Kentucky census with the following household: 2 males ages 5-10 (James b: 1825 and Philip b: 1818/1819), 2 females under 5 (Elizabeth b: 1830 and Sarah b: 1829), 1 female age 5-10 (Mary B. b: 1820), 1 female age 10-15 (Martha b: 1815/1817), and 1 female age 30-40 (Mary b: 1792).
Then in the 1840 Adair County, Kentucky census Martha the eldest daughter is gone and Mary’s family consists of: 1 male, age 15-20 (James b: 1825), 1 male age 20-30 (Philip b: 1818/1819), 1 female age 5-10 (Elizabeth b: 1830), 1 female age 10-15 (Sarah b: 1829), 1 female age 15-20 (Mary B. b: 1820), and 1 female age 40-50 (Mary b: 1792).
In the 1850, 1860 and 1870 censuses (all in Adair County), all of the daughters are gone and Mary is living with her two sons, James and Philip. Philip died in 1876 and Mary is not found in the 1880 census.

6. Simeon Alden WINFREY "Simms or Sims" (Philip

Simeon and Margaret were married in 1820 and are first found in the 1830 census in Adair County, Kentucky with the following family: 2 males under 5 (Elisha b: 1828 and Rudulph b: 1826/1827), 1 male 5-10 (Hamilton b: 1820/1821), 1 male 30-40 (Simeon b: 1795), 2 females under 5 (Genentta b: ca 1825, Emily b: 1821/1822), 1 female 20-30 (Margaret b: 1801).
They are next found in the 1840 Adair County, Kentucky census with all of their know children including Emily who married Logan Hardin on 25 Dec 1839. Logan must have died shortly after the marriage. The family consisted of the following: 1 male under 5 (Philip b: 1832/1833), 1 male 5-10 (Elisha b: 1828), 1 male 10-15 (Rudulph b: 1826/1827), 1 male 15-20 (Hamilton b: 1820/1821), 1 male 40-50 (Simeon b: 1795), 1 female under 5 (Sarah b: 1837/1838), 1 female 5-10 (Martha b: 1834/1835), 1 female 10-15 (Margaret b: 1830/1831), 2 females 15-20 (Genentta b: ca 1825 and Emily b: 1821/1822), 1 female 30-40 (Margaret b: 1801).
Simeon and Margaret are next found in the 1850 Adair County, Kentucky census as follows:
Sims A. Winfrey, age 50, farmer, born Virginia.
Margarett Winfrey, age 48, born North Carolina.
Emily Hardin, age 28, born Kentucky.
Rudolph Winfrey, age 23, farmer, born Kentucky.
Elisha T. Winfrey, age 21, farmer, born Kentucky.
Margarett L. Winfrey, age 19, born Kentucky.
Philip P. Winfrey, age 17, farmer, born Kentucky.
Martha E. Winfrey, age 15, born Kentucky.
Sarah A. Winfrey, age 12, born Kentucky.
S. R. Hardin, age 9, born Kentucky.
The last census that we find Simeon and Margaret is in the 1860 Adair County, Kentucky census:
Sims A. Winfrey, age 64, farmer, born Kentucky.
Margaret, age 55, born Kentucky.
Rudolph L. Winfrey, age 32, farm laborer, born Kentucky.
Sarah A. Winfrey, age 22, born Kentucky.
Where Simeon was born is unclear. His parents, Philip and Martha, moved from Buckingham County, Virginia to Lincoln County, Kentucky sometime in 1795. Simeon was born on 15 Nov 1795; therefore he could have been born in either place. To complicate the matter further, in the 1850 census he gives his place of birth as Virginia and in the 1860 census he gives it as Kentucky.
.
Simeon married 1 Margaret NEAT daughter of Rudolph NEAT and Maria Margaretha FREY on 5 Sep 1820 in Adair County, KY. Margaret was born 2 on 24 Dec 1801 in Rowan County, NC. She died 3 after 1860.
Margaret’s father Rudolph Neat founded the river town of Neatsville, Kentucky, which once rivaled Columbia as Adair County’s leading community. The town was a bustling community with stores, a hotel, a doctor and was even incorporated for a time. Unfortunately a flood destroyed Neatsville in the early 1900’s when the Green River, as a result of the flood, made a new channel right through the main part of town. (Taken from an article by Susanne Pelz Grant entitled “Neatsville”, edited.)

Archer Winfrey and Mary Drake’s marriage license was dated 5 Mar 1821, however they are found living in their own household in the 1820 Adair County, Kentucky census. Therefore it is appears that they were married in 1820, or before, but did not obtain an actual marriage license until 5 Mar 1821.
Their first known child, Johanna, was born ca 1825 however based on information taken from the 1830 and 1840 Adair County, Kentucky censuses, it appears that Archer and Mary had two additional daughters who were both born prior to Johanna.
In the 1830 census the family consisted of the following: 1 male 15-20 (hired hand), 1 male 30-40 (Archer, b: 1797/1800), 1 female under 5 (Martha, b: 1829), 3 females 5-10 (Johanna, b: 1825, unknown daughter, born 1820/1825, unknown daughter, born 1820/1825), and 1 female 20-30 (Mary, b: 1800/1804).
Then in the 1840 census the family is listed as follows: 1 male under 5 (Charles, b: 1835/1836), 1 male 15-20 (hired hand), 1 male 40-50 (Archer, b: 1797/1800), 1 female under 5 (Diane, b: 1837), 2 females 5-10 (Mary, b: 1833, Sarah, b: 1831), 2 females 10-15 (Martha, b: 1829, Johanna, b: 1825), 2 females 15-20 (unknown daughter, born 1820/1825, unknown daughter, born 1820/1825), and 1 female 30-40 (Mary, b: 1800/1804).
Archibald married 1 Mary E. DRAKE "Polly" on 5 Mar 1821. Mary was born 2, 3 about 1800/1804. She died 4 before 1850. She was buried 5 in the Tabernacle Cemetery, Neatsville, Adair County, KY.

) was born 1, 2 on 11 Jul 1802 in Adair County, KY. He died in 1853 in Carroll County, MO.
Reuben S. Winfrey is first found in the 1840 census in Adair County, Kentucky. His family consisted of the following:
2 males under 5 (Archer C, b: about 1836, and William Henry, b: 19 May 1840/Sons)
1 male 5-10 (Francis Marion, b: 16 Aug 1834/Son)

1 female 30-40 (Editha, b: about 1809/ Wife)
1 female 70-80 (Martha, b: 28 Jun 1765/Reuben’s mother)
Reuben is next found in the 1850 census in Adair County, Kentucky with the following family:
Reuben Winfrey, age 47, farmer, born Kentucky.
Eda Winfrey, age 41, born Virginia.
Sarah L. Winfrey, age 17, born Kentucky.
Francis M. Winfrey, age 16, born Kentucky.
Arch C. Winfrey, age 14, born Kentucky.
William H. Winfrey, age 10, born Kentucky.
Mary F. Winfrey, age 8, born Kentucky.
All of the children listed above belonged to Reuben and Editha, with the exception of Sarah L. Winfrey who was the daughter of Archibald Winfrey, Reuben’s brother. Archibald and his wife Mary both died prior to the 1850 census and all of there children were either married or went to live with relatives, in this case Sarah L. came to live with her uncle Reuben and his family. Sometime after 8 August 1850, when the 1850 census was taken, Reuben and his family moved to Carroll County, Missouri where he died in 1853.
Reuben married 1 Editha MCCAIN daughter of William MCCAIN and Caroline Matilda TINSLEY on 25 Dec 1832 in Adair County, KY. Editha was born 2 about 1808/1809 in Virginia, South Carolina or Kentucky. She died 3 on 10 Jul 1883 in Carroll County, MO. She was buried 4 in the Gilead Cemetery, Carroll County, MO.
It is not clear where Editha was born, she is only found in three censuses. In the 1850 census in Adair County, Kentucky she gives her birth place as Virginia, in the 1860 census in Carroll County, Missouri she gives it as South Carolina, and in the 1880 census, also in Carroll County, Missouri, she gives it as Kentucky.
After the death of Reuben, Editha married Lindsey Adkins on 24 Oct 1855. Lindsey died in Nov 1868 after which Editha moved in with her widowed son, Francis Marion Winfrey, and spent the balance of her life helping him raise his children.

Francis Marion Winfrey moved to Carroll County, Missouri with his parents from Adair County, Kentucky in 1850 when he was 16 years of age. As far as is known he spent the balance of his life in Carroll County, however his first wife, Susan McGuire, died and was buried in Nevada, Vernon County, Missouri in 1873. Why she was in Vernon County and why she wasn’t buried in Carroll County is unclear.
The following is the obituary of Francis Marion Winfrey (Carrollton. Missouri newspaper dated 17 May 1929):
Frank Winfrey died 5/13/1929, married Susan A. McGuire 2/24/1859, she died 9/15/1873. He then married Mrs. Irene Fuller 11/11/1885, she died 10/18/1928. When Irene was born is unclear. Based on census information from the 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910 and 1920 censuses she was born anywhere from 1842 to 1849. The obituary of her second husband, Francis Marion Winfrey, gives it as 1843
Irene was the widow of Alphonso Fuller son of Sylvestor Fuller and Sarah McGinnis. It is interesting to note that Irene was Alphonso Fuller’s second wife, his first wife Harriet McGuire, was the sister of Susan McGuire, first wife of Irene’s second husband Francis Marion Winfrey.

In the 1870 census he and his family are in the Blue Mound Township, Livingston County, Missouri living across the road from his brother William Henry Winfrey. He is listed as a farmer with his wife Nancy J. and two additional children: Reuben T. and William H. James F. must have died since the last census because he is not listed in the 1870 census. In the 1880 census Archer and his family are back in Carroll County in the Eugene Township. He is again listed as a farmer with his wife Nancy and one additional child, Allie D. Sometime after the 1880 census, but before 1893 when their son Reuben died, Archer and his family moved to Ottawa County, Oklahoma. |

Mary Florinda WINFREY was born on 12 Aug 1842 in Adair County, KY. She died 1 on 20 Jan 1929 in Pawnee County, OK.
Mary Florinda Winfrey's first husband was Joseph Hunter McCandless. He disappeared during the Civil War (about 1863) on a wagon train between Wavery and Springfield, Missouri. Mary and Joseph had one daughter Lucy McCandless, born 10 Oct 1862. (Correspondence with Sue Jones)
Mary’s second husband John Benjamin Oliver died in 1911 and is buried in the Christison Cemetery in the Blue Mound Township in Livingston County, Missouri. Based on a paper written by Mary Winfrey Darby in 1971 entitled “History of the Winfrey Family”, Mary died in Pawnee County, Oklahoma on 20 Jan 1929. During the Civil War, John Benjamin Oliver served as a Private in Company K of the 4th Provisional Regiment, Missouri State Militia. He entered service on October 10, 1864 and was honorably discharged on March 11, 1865. John Benjamin must have served with his future brother-in-law William Henry Winfrey who married John Benjamin' s sister Margaret Parthenia Catherine Oliver because William Henry served in the same unit during the same time period. John Benjamin's second wife, Mary Florinda Winfrey, was also the sister of William Henry Winfrey. It is interesting to note that John Benjamin's first wife, Kiziah Haynes, was the sister of Enoch Porter Haynes, Jr., who married John Benjamin's first cousin Mary Jane Russell.
